This picture of Willem Adrian Labuschagne was taken in 2003. He was not always so beautiful, as we can plainly see from the historic pictures to follow.
In the opinion of his family, Willem is the undisputed head of the family and all–round philosopher and brainy guy, guiding us through life with a firm grip on reality and an amazing understanding of the natural, political and artificial world around us.
So, it comes as no surprise that he is a logician and theoretical computer scientist employed by the University of Otago in Dunedin. Go to Willem's web page at the Department of Computer Science if you want to know more about his education and career.
He currently holds the position of Senior Lecturer and is hugely popular with the students. At the end of 2004 he was one of 10 lecturers selected by the student body as the best lecturers on the teaching staff at the university.
This is Willem first in 1953 at 9 months old and then in 1969, at an exciting 17 years old. The third photo was taken in 1973 while a student at the University of Port Elizabeth in South Africa. Yes, it is true — that beard has been around for more than 30 years!
What does he enjoy about Dunedin? Well, of course there is the cool weather, and then he loves making a fire for us all to huddle around. Also a favourite is going for long walks on some of the many walking tracks around Dunedin.
He is impressed by Central Otago wines, especially in the company of amiable colleagues such as Kevin Novins.
